John Leonard Temeyer, 84 of Independence, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

John was born on January 2, 1929 son of Earl and Lena Temeyer. He grew up in Independence and attended Westburg Township Country School. He was united in marriage to Louise A. Rhines on September 3, 1960 in Waterloo, IA. He farmed for over 40 years and owned his own tiling business. He also served in the Korean War, earning a purple heart. John loved farming, the Lord and serving children. He also loved watching his son and grandson race on the Independence/Vinton dirt tracks. John enjoyed deer hunting with his sons and grandson.

He was a member of Hope Wesleyan Church and for many years was a Sunday School Teacher for adults and children, served as youth leader and was part of the church board.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise Temeyer, two sons Jeff D. Temeyer of Independence and Todd J. Temeyer of Independence, his grandchildren Kristan (John) Hunter of North Liberty, Justin Temeyer of Independence and Erin Temeyer of West Des Moines, his great grandchildren Lydia, Elise and Adelyn Hunter of North Liberty, one brother; George (Carol) Temeyer of Independence, two sisters; Carol (Dick) Siglin of Independence, Kathy (Rex) Hooton of St. James, Missouri, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Chuck, Harold, and Ray Temeyer and three sisters, June Bonefas, Marge Steinbron, and Donna Lynch.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, at the Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence with Rev. Bob Solon officiating. Burial with Graveside Military Honors will held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, IA. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, IA, and from 9 AM till Services Wednesday at the church.
