Obituary for Enid Lou Gillihan (Burns)

Enid Lou (Burns) Gillihan, 80 passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016 at Lexington Estate Care Center in Independence, Iowa. She lived a long successful life filled with much happiness and love.

Enid was born on October 3, 1935 in Anita, Iowa to Tom and Wilma (Wagner) Burns. Following her graduation from the Anita High School in 1953, she received a degree in elementary Education from Drake University in Des Moines, IA. She married Clarence “Gene” Gillihan on June 17, 1956. They had two children; Kathryn Gillihan, Rowley, IA, and Shawn Gillihan, Edgewood, IA.

Education was an important part of Enid’s life. She taught school in Madrid and Gowrie, Iowa, but the majority of her years teaching 6th grade at East Buchanan Schools in Quasqueton and Winthrop, Iowa. She retired in 1996. Enid was also a long time member of the PEO.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords, jumbles, and other puzzles. Enid and Gene both enjoyed music and loved to go dancing.

She was a loving, thoughtful and caring mother. She will be greatly missed.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Gene, two sisters; Betty and Marie, and one brother Orin. She is survived by her two children.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1: 30 PM Tuesday, February 9th, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, Iowa with Pastor Lisa Thedens officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date.
