Obituary for Karen Sue Coonrad (Conrad)
Karen Sue Coonrad, 60, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at her home in Independence, Iowa.
Karen was born on June 18, 1956 in Independence, Iowa the daughter of Richard L. and Mary V. (Penny) Conrad. She graduated from the Independence High School with the class of 1974 and received her Registered Nursing Degree from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo, Iowa in 1983. She was employed as a Psychiatric Nurse with the Mental Health Institute in Independence for 30 years.
Karen loved nurturing her family especially her grandchildren, she enjoyed caring for people even complete strangers, and her dogs Zoe and Baby.
She is survived by two daughters; Heather (Jim Jones) Coonrad, Rowley, IA, Tami (Adam) Halvorson, Cedar Falls, IA. Six grandchildren; Austin, Mitchell, and Victoria Evens and Carter, Kelsey, and Cooper Halvorson. A special friend; Bob Niec, Center Point, IA, eleven brothers and sisters; Richard Conrad, Independence, IA, Randy Conrad, Hazleton, IA, Lynn Lyle, Cedar Rapids, IA, Mark and Mike Conrad, Independence, IA, Deb LeMasters, Waterloo, IA, Tracy and Terry Conrad, Independence, IA, Paul Conrad, Corydon, IA, Penny Hackert and Jim Conrad, Independence, IA.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, a nephew Christopher Conrad, and a mother-in-law Dorothy Coonrad.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, December 23, 2016, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 5 to 8 PM Thursday and from 8 to 11 Am Friday at the funeral home.
