Joyce Y. Cornwell, 81, of Independence, IA died Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.

Joyce was born May 29, 1936 in Raymond, IA the daughter of George D. and Nellie I. (Brown) Stocks. She attended the Poyner School in Raymond, IA and was a 1954 graduate of East High School in Waterloo, IA. On April 2, 1959 she married Bill Cornwell and they made their home in Shell Rock, IA. In 1974 they moved to Independence, IA and Joyce started working for the Buchanan County Hospital as a cook.

She enjoyed many things in her life, but she loved to read, play Bingo, and gamble. But she loved spending time with her family the most.

She is survived by three sons; Mike (Sherri) Cornwell, Independence, IA, Mark Cornwell, Waterloo, IA, and Vern (Linda) Cornwell, Independence, IA, seven grandchildren Kayla Cornwell, Jamie Cornwell, Kassie Petersen, Rusty Cornwell, Bryan Cornwell, Paige Cornwell, and Jordan Cornwell, six great grandchildren, three brothers Delmar Stocks, Evansdale, IA, Charles Stocks, Evansdale, IA, and Gerald (Arlene) Stocks, and a sister Rita Flood, Janesville, IA.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, and five brothers Milo, Eugene, Graydon, and George Stocks, and two sisters Darlene Christophersen, and Velma Stocks.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday October 17, 2017 at 11 AM at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA, with Rev. John Sheda Officiating. Burial will be held at the Poyner Township Cemetery in Gilbertville, IA. A visitation will be held on Monday October 16, 2017 from 4 PM until 8 PM and on Tuesday morning from 9 Am until services.
