Elizabeth Butters, 78, of Independence, IA died Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West Campus in Independence, IA.

She was born May 18, 1939, In Panama City, Panama, the daughter of Christbol and Francesca (Herra) Morales. She attended the schools in Panama City and went on to receive numerous certificates from the University of Panama. She worked as a Secretary in The Social Security Department in Panama during the day, for several years. At night she taught dance lessons at the YWCA in Panama and worked as a waitress at the Hilton Hotel in Panama. In 1967m, she met the love of her life, Robert Allen Butters, and they were married on February 6, 1967, at Fort Clayton Panama. After Robert left the United States Army they made their home in Independence, Iowa. In 1979, she started to work as a Psych Aid at the Mental Health Institute in Independence. She retired in 2006 after working there for 26 years.

Elizabeth enjoyed spending time with her family. She would travel throughout eastern Iowa to watch her grandchildren play in baseball or softball games. Her grandchildren where the world to her, and she was the rock of the family.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert A. Butters, her mother; Francesca Morales, her children; Raymond Butters, Oelwein, IA, Francis Butters, Jesup, IA, Mary Butters-Troxell, Oelwein, IA, and Elmay (Arturo De La Cruz) Butters, Independence, IA, her grandchildren; Brandon & Raymond Jr. Butters, Ashley & Mackenzie Butters, Nyomi, Jazmin, & Lacy Troxell, Tatiana Butters, and Bryton De La Cruz, a brother; Carlos Morales, Panama City, Panama, and two nephews Oscar and Dario Montero

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her father, Christobal Morales, and a sister Julia Carmen Montero.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 Am on Monday, May 21, 2018, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA, with Rev. David Beckman Presiding. Burial will be held at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. A Visitation will be held on Sunday May 20, 2018 from 4 until 7 PM at the Reiff Family Center in Independence, IA. A Rosary will be said at 4 pm, and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7 PM on Sunday.
