David A. Wessels 85, of Independence, IA died Monday, July 9, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, IA.

David was born June 4, 1933 in Petersburg, IA, the son of Ralph B. and Martha K. (Koopman) Wessels. He attended school at St. Francis Catholic Schools Dyersville, IA. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on March 11, 1952 and served proudly until March 10, 1955. On Sept 4, 1954 he married Carol Christoph in Dyersville, IA. After serving in the military he worked with his father tuckpointing. They later made their home in Independence and David began working for John Deer in 1963. He retired from John Deer in 1991. Carol died February 5, 2012. He later married Christina Meister on September 11, 2014, at the Veterans Park in Independence, IA.

David enjoyed the outdoors, and spent many hours trapping and fishing. He also enjoyed socializing with friends during happy hour in Independence, IA. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

David is survived by his wife Christina Wessels Independence, IA, children; Dawn (Dan Martinson) Wessels, Independence, IA, Julie (Kevin Lange) Wessels, Riverview, FL, Bruce (Cindy) Wessels Independence, IA, Brian Wessels, Independence, IA, John Wessels, Waterloo, IA, James Wessels, Manchester, IA, step children; Cory (Jill) Wilson, Independence, IA, Emily (Jamell) Topliff, Waterloo, IA, 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, his sisters; Doris Wiskus, Colesburg, IA, Nancy Goerdt, Earlville, IA, and a sister-in-law Doris Wessels, Epworth, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Phil Wessels, and three grandchildren; Erin Wessels, Emily Webster, and Trent Phillips.

Services are at 10:30 A.M. Saturday July 14, 2018 at Reiff Family Center & Funeral Home with Rev. Robert McMurdock officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 P.M. Friday July 13, 2018 at Reiff Family Center & Funeral Home.
