Obituary for Jerry LaVerne Schuman

Jerry LaVerne  Schuman
Jerry L. Schuman, 82, of Independence, IA died Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, IA.

He was born on November 7, 1935, in Independence, IA the son of Chester H. and Faye M. (Martin) Schuman. He was a 1954 graduate of Jefferson High, Independence, IA and went on to receive a degree in Business from Gates Business School in Waterloo, IA. On June 10, 1956 he was united in marriage to Nancy L. Rosenstiel at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. In 1977 he and Nancy purchased the Hallmark store in Independence, and later sold it in 1987. Nancy passed away on March 31, 1995. For over thirty years he worked as a machinist at John Deere in Waterloo, IA. On Nov 1, 1997 he married Elaine Miller Bond at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.

Jerry loved to work with his hands, he enjoyed wood working, gardening and home improvement projects. He was a member of the Lyons Club in Independence. He liked to travel throughout the United States with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Schuman, his children; Lynn (Alan) Carlson, Independence, IA, Jeffrey (Laurie) Schuman, Chesterfield, MO, and Mary Bond (Dr. Mark) Kulp, Destrehan, LA, his grandchildren; Elizabeth Carlson, Ethan Carlson, Eldon Carlson, Allison Schuman, Gregory Schuman, and Jonah Kulp, two brothers; Norman Schuman, Franklin, WI, and Kenneth Schuman, Cedar Falls, IA, and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday September 6, 2018 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, IA with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday September 5, 2018 from 4 until 7 PM at the Reiff Family Center and Funeral Home in Independence, IA.
