Obituary for Donald Clifford Boies

Donald Clifford Boies
Donald C. Boies, 91, of Cedar Rapids, IA died January 3, 2018 at the Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Donald was born September 11, 1926 at the family home in Rowley, IA. He was the eighth of nine children born to H. Glen and Leta (Gaylord) Boies. He attended schools in Brandon, Independence, Aurora, and Winthrop. After graduating from Winthrop High School in 1944 he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of sergeant.

Following military service, he farmed north of Winthrop for several years. In September of 1952 he married Therma Jean Stohr in Waterloo, IA. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids and spent their careers working at Collins Radio, later Rockwell-Collins. Don and Therma had a vibrant social life. They belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, enjoyed meeting with friends at a quiet local pub, and entertaining in their home. Don was a long-time member of the American Legion Post 298. He looked forward each year to the opening of pheasant season and hunting with family and friends. He was an avid gardener and was especially proud of his perfectly manicured lawn.

Therma died in 1995, Donald moved to Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids in 2012 and lived there for the remainder of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three sisters; Marion McNeal, June Benz, and Burnita Reed, and five brothers Horace, Gaylord, Herbert (killed in Germany, WW2 and buried in Holland), Robert, and Richard Boies.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Lois Boies of Oelwein, and many nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the staff at Cottage Grove Place and Above and Beyond Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday January 9, 2018 at 11 AM at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may visit from 9 AM until services on Tuesday.
