Deleva “Deb” M. Platt, 85, of Independence, IA, and formally of Oelwein, IA, died on March 3, 2018 at her home in Independence, IA.

Deleva was born on June 16, 1932, on the family farm in rural Independence, IA, the daughter of Leroy E. and Lena (Martin) Higgins. She attended the Country Schools and Independence High School. Her first job was working in volume control for Ratheon Manufacturing in Oelwein, IA, and met the love of her life there. On February 22, 1953 she married Ross Platt at the First Baptist Church in Independence, IA. They made their home in Oelwein, IA; were Deleva was a homemaker and worked for Carnation Dairy as a Bookkeeper, and later as a Store Manager for Eleanors Toggery. She was very active member of the First Baptist Church in Oelwein; where she served with the Women’s Circle, as a Deaconess and taught religious education classes.

Volunteering was a big part of her life. She belonged to the Oelwein Hospital Auxiliary, and later volunteered at with Cedar Valley Hospice for ten years. She also received the Hospice Volunteer of the Year Award.

Deleva is survived by her daughters Susan Klaas, Austin, TX, and Cindy Hanlon, Casa Grande, AZ. Four grandchildren, Andrea (Ryan) Malloy, Natalie Klaas, Casey Hanlon-Duvall, and Cody Hanlon; two great grandchildren, Conner Evans, and Cora Malloy; a sister, Nancy Hoffman, Independence, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ross Platt, four brothers John, James, Richard, and Arnold Higgins, and a sister Deloris M. “Sally” Murphy.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday March 12, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be held in Wilson Cemetery. Friends may visit from 2 PM until 4 Pm on Sunday March 11, 2018 at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA, and from 8:30 until service on Monday morning.
