Obituary for Ned Arthur Johnson

Ned A. Johnson, 60, of Winthrop, IA died surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at his home in Winthrop, IA.

He was born on October 14, 1957 in Independence, IA the son of George A. and Dorothy M. (Schamp) Johnson. Ned attended the Independence School District and worked for several years at Bill & Don’s Gas Station in Independence, Temeyer Farms, and did construction for several years. On July 9, 1976 Ned married his highschool sweet heart, Pamela Sue Stevens, in Independence, IA, and later attended Hawkeye Community College to receive a degree in Civil Engineering. In 1988 he started working for the Buchanan County Secondary Roads Department as an Assistant to the County Engineer. He retired after 30 years, on January 15, 2018.

Ned enjoyed spending time outdoors, loved to fish and hunt. He built a cabin in Harpers Ferry, IA to spend time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Pamela, Winthrop, IA, his children; Cory (Kayla) Johnson, Aurora, IA, Heidi Johnson, Dubuque, IA, Joe (KC Courtney) Johnson, Winthrop, IA, and Cassandra (Austin Patterson) Johnson, Jesup, IA; eight grandchildren, three sisters; Nancy (Bob) Frerichs, Allen, NE, Gloria (Stephen) Kroeze, Norwalk, IA, and Anna Izzo, Winter Springs, FL; and two brothers Jim (Sandi) Johnson, Independence, IA, and Richard (Connie) Johnson, Travares, FL; and a sister-in-law Susan Johnson, Kernersville, NC,

Ned is preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy Johnson, and two brothers, Kent Johnson, and Joel Johnson.


A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 4 PM until 8 PM, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Winthrop, IA. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
