Dorothy M. Smith, 86, of Independence, IA died Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA.

Dorothy was born July 15, 1932 in Independence, IA; the daughter of Ray L. and Anna E. (Hayden) Boies. She was a 1950 graduate of St. John’s Catholic High School in Independence. On January 13, 1962 she was married to Richard E. Smith in Independence. Dorothy started to work early in life; when she was nine years old she started working as a waitress at White’s Café in Independence. Later she worked for the Old Mill Ice Cream Shop, and the Buchanan County Recorders Office. Dorothy was active in the local community and was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission in Independence, the Northeast Iowa Council for Substance Abuse, the Democratic National Committee, and the St. John’s Rosary Society.

She loved the company of family and friends, and her home was always open to everyone that had a good heart. She often provided daycare for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, collecting coins and stamps, and finished a crossword every night before going to bed.

Dorothy is survived by her children; Diane Bellendier, Independence, IA, Angie Sorg, Independence, IA, and Michael (Donna Paulsen) Smith, Norwalk, IA, seven grandchildren; Candy (Don) Turner, Independence, IA, Aaron (Chelsea) Bellendier, Independence, IA, Austin (Rashell) Sorg, Cedar Falls, IA, Allie Sorg, Independence, IA, Jordan (Destri) Millsap, Chelsea, OK, Ryley Smith, Norwalk, IA, and Rece Smith, Norwalk, IA, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of forty-seven years, Richard Smith, a great grandson, Kamryn Williams, four sisters; Virginia Butters, Bonnie Duran, Eileen Straw, and Phyllis Frey, two brothers Leroy “Moose,” and Dave Boies.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday August 8, 2018, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA, with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope, Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 until 8 PM on Tuesday August 7, 2018 at the Reiff Family Center in Independence, IA. A Rosary will be said by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at 4 PM, and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 8 PM with Sharon Bainbridge officiating.
