Obituary for William Joseph "Bill" Ciesielski

William J. “Bill” Ciesielski, 87, of Independence, IA, died Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at ABCM Rehabilitation Center’s West Campus in Independence, IA.

Bill was born on November 8, 1931 in Independence, IA the son of Joseph A. and Lorraine (Byron) Ciesielski. He was a 1950 graduate of the Jesup High School, Jesup, IA and served with the US Army during the Korean Conflict, from October 2, 1952 until his discharge on January 17, 1953. He returned to the Independence area where he married Beverly A. Verstraete in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, IA. The couple made their home in Independence, IA where Bill was employed as the Maintenance Supervisor at the Mental Health Institute for 30 years prior to his retirement.

He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the American Legion Post, the MHI Fire Department, and The Knights of Columbus. He served on the Independence City Council, and on the Buchanan County Veterans Affairs Board.

Bill was very proud of his service to his country and was very active in the community. He was a member of the committee that started the Avenue of Flags. He loved gardening, socializing with his family and friends, and simply spending time at his cabin on the Wapsipinicon River.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Beverly A. Ciesielski, three children; Cindy Horn, Independence, IA., Randy (Jennifer) Ciesielski, Hazleton, IA., and Tamara (David) Coleman, Urbana, IA. Seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Four brothers; Robert, David, Thomas (Sharon), and Leo “Pete” (Liola) Ciesielski all of Independence, IA.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Lorraine Ciesielski, a son-in-law; Duane Horn, two great grandchildren, a sister; Joyce Ciesielski, and two sisters-in-law; Sally Ciesielski and Darlene Ciesielski.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, April 15th at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence, IA with Rev. Christopher Weber and Rev. David Beckman officiation. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 PM Sunday, and from 9 to 10 AM Monday at the Reiff Family Center in Independence where a Military Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 PM Sunday.
