Obituary for Alice M. Brown

Alice M. Brown, 96, of Waterloo, IA, formally of Independence, IA, died on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Ravenwood Care Center in Waterloo, IA.

Alice was born on May 27, 1924 in Fairbank, IA, the daughter of Paul G. and Alta L. (Ohl) Shannon. She attended the Fairbank Schools thru the 8th grade and began working as a waitress in Independence at the Seelan and Howe's Cafe. On November 28, 1945 she married Burton R. Brown at the St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. Together they farmed and raised three boys. Alice enjoyed helping on the farm, gardening, canning, and cooking. In 1968, they moved to town and had a daughter. Alice continued gardening, canning, and cooking, although her garden was not as big as when she was on the farm, it was large enough to keep her busy. Their house in town was known as the house on the corner with the big garden. She took pride in what they grew in the garden and would win ribbons at the fair. She enjoyed family gatherings and being with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children; Dale Brown, Independence, IA, Burton D. Brown, Independence, IA, and Susan (Aaron) Joens, Waterloo, IA, ten grandchildren, several great grandchildren, two brothers; Cecil Shannon (Janet Wissler), Oelwein, IA, and Clarence (Alice) Shannon, Fairbank, IA, two sisters; Joyce Leininger, Evansdale, IA, and Helen Welsh, Brandon, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
