Obituary for Dale Vernon Hilmer

Dale Vernon Hilmer, 79, of Independence passed away on Sunday August 16, 2020 at ABCM Rehabilitation Center West in Independence, IA.

Dale was born on June 16, 1941 to Hugo H. and Jessie L. (Close) Hilmer of Vinton, IA. He attended elementary school in Walker, IA and later graduated from Alburnet High School. He married Mayme Graves and they later divorced. In 1986 he was married to Janet Dudley, who preceded him in death in 2013. He spent more than 20 years as a semi-truck driver for A-Line Trucking in Marion, IA.

In his free time Dale enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also liked to drive and visit the Amish population in the surrounding communities. Dale’s interests also extended to racing and the Chicago Cubs.

Dale is survived by his children Diane (Steve) Farrell of Independence, IA.; Sandy (Mike) Ohl of Winthrop, IA,; Kathy (Joe) Brown of Independence, IA.; and Tom Hilmer of Independence, IA; his 12 grandchildren; his 31 great grandchildren; his sisters Louise Vogel of Key West, FL and Doris Hansen of Cedar Rapids, IA; his brother Herman Hilmer of Cedar Falls, IA; his brother in law Kenneth Graves and his special friend Ruby Kimber.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janet, and a sister Betsy Reuter.

A celebration of life service will be held for Dale on Saturday August 22nd at 11:00 AM in the Reiff Family Center in Independence, IA.
