Obituary for Gerald Raymond "Jerry" McCalley

Gerald “Jerry” R. McCalley, 85, of Independence, IA died Monday June 3, 2019 at St. MercyOne – Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, IA.

He was born on March 26, 1934 at his family home in Independence, IA the son of Durward A. and Josephine (Knudson) McCalley. He graduated from the Independence High School in 1952, and enlisted in the US Navy, serving until his discharge on November 7, 1956. He returned to Independence and was married to Joan M Schmitt on July 13, 1957. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where Jerry attended Coe College; he later transferred to the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA. While attending College in Cedar Falls, and after his graduation; he taught at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, IA., then moved to Minonk, IL, and was employed with the Minonk State Bank. In 1968 the family moved to Hanover, IL where he became the President of the Hanover Bank. In 1976 he returned to Independence, Iowa and became employed with Security Sate Bank, rising to the position of Vice-President.

Jerry was a member and former Grand Knight of the St. Pius 10th Knights of Columbus, the St. John’s Parish Financial Board, and several breakfast clubs. He enjoyed golf, fishing, skiing, woodworking and building furniture. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 62 years Joan M. McCalley, three children; Kevin (Melanie) McCalley, Riverside, CA, Staci (Jeff) Holden, Pierre, SD, and Chris (Maria) McCalley, Illinois City, IL. Six Grandchildren, Four Great Grandchildren, a sister; Shirley (Jack) Russell, Little Falls, MN., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Durward and Josephine McCalley.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Independence with Rev. Paul McManus officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may call from 3 to 6 PM Sunday at the Reiff Family Center’s Funeral Home in Independence where a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 6 PM.
