Obituary

John Fredrick Muench, 79 of Independence, Iowa passed away peacefully with family by his side on Friday, December 13, 2019 at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN from complications of an infection to his heart.

John was born on January 26, 1940, in Independence, IA, to Ida and John Muench. He was a 1958 graduate of Jefferson High School, Independence, IA. In 1958 he purchased a farm in rural Aurora, IA, and he also worked at John Deere in Waterloo, IA for nine years.

John was united in marriage to Sheri Miller on July 21, 1963, celebrating 56 years together. John loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. He had a great sense of humor and a natural curiosity. In recent years, the couple enjoyed the winter months in Mercedes, TX; and spent summers in Iowa. He was a former member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aurora and recently joined Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. John was a generous man, donating crops to the Food Bank, and supporting Camp Ewalu in Strawberry Point.

John loved to farm and was a steward of the land. He farmed all his life and was an advocate of soil conservation. He was on the National Resources Conservation Service board for many years and applied conservation practices such as the Conservation Reserve Program and strip tilling.

In addition to his wife, Sheri, John is survived by his son Brian of Chanhassen, MN, a daughter Carol (Jim) Fleter of Marietta, GA, and three granddaughters, Jensen, Morgan and Lily Muench. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a year-old son Michael John in 1969, and three sisters, Lillian McLaren, Helen Haverkamp and Loretta Hubbart.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday December 21, 2019 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, IA, with Rev. Ed Zaiser presiding. Burial will be held in Wilson Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 PM on Friday December 20, 2019 at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Ewalu or the Food Bank.
