Kenneth V. Chudzinski, 72, of Independence, IA, died on Sunday February 8, 2020, at his home in Independence, IA following a long illness.

Kenneth was born on January 19, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Victor L. and Ruby (Schoonmaker) Chudzinski. He attended elementary school in Viola, IA and was a 1966 graduate of Anamosa High School. He enlisted into the US Army on January 10, 1967 and served in the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1969. When he returned from the service, he attended Kirkwood Community College and received a degree in Environmental Health Care. On May 28, 1971 he married Deborah Kaye Posey in Waterloo, IA. Together they lived in Fort Dodge, and Des Moines, IA while Kenneth worked for the State of Iowa doing environment assessments. In 1975 they moved on to Manchester, IA where he worked for the Department of Natural Resources. He accepted a position working for the City of Independence in 1980, as the Wastewater Treatment Superintendent and remained there for over thirty years.

Ken was known for his dry and mischievous humor. He also enjoyed the outdoors and could often easily be found fishing and camping on the nicest days of the year. Spending time with his family was the most important thing to him; especially doting on his granddaughter, Isabell. The family would travel on vacations throughout the United States. Ken was a train enthusiast and could spend hours watching trains come and go.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Deborah of Independence, IA, his children; Diana (Steven) Graveman, Mt. Auburn, IA, Kevin Chudzinski, North Liberty, IA, and Pennie (Erik Andersen) Marshalltown, IA, a granddaughter, Isabell Graveman, three sisters; Virginia (Russell) Hatch, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Ida (Ed) Harrison, Escondido, CA, and Ruth Clark, Santa Maria, CA, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Ruby Chudzinski.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the University of Iowa Oncology Department, Dr. Laurie Lychholm & Team A, the nurses on 4JPE, Cedar Valley Hospice, and Area Ambulance. Your care and hospitality will not be forgotten.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday February 15, 2020 at the Mt Auburn United Methodist Church 201 Traer St, Mt Auburn, IA, with Rev. Luke Evans officiating. Burial will be held in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 8 PM on Friday February 14, 2020 at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

Kevin and family,

I was sorry to read about your father passing. My prayers are with you and yours during this most difficult of times. I have learned during my life that God will never bring us to something without bringing us through it. When I saw your name, I smiled and thought about you and your classmates.

God bless,

Dr. Eldon B. Swanson

Condolences to the family. Ken was quite a outdoorsman. I know LeRoy enjoyed working with him in Boy Scouts. I enjoyed working with him in later years working with the waste water program. He always had a quick comment or a hello for me. He will be missed.

Diana and I used to work together. One thing that I know for sure was her love for her Dad. She always spoke so highly of him. I am so very sorry for your loss. You are all in my prayers.
