Obituary for Larry Paul Bonefas

Larry P. Bonefas, 70, of Glenwood, MO, died on September 12, 2019 in rural Lancaster, MO.

Larry was born on August 9, 1949 in Independence, IA the son of Burton John and Rose Catherine (Amfahr) Bonefas. He was raised in Jesup, IA and was a member of the 1967 graduating class of Jesup High School. In 1970 He joined the United States Navy and proudly served until his honorable discharge in 1974. On May 19, 1978 in Independence, IA, Larry married the love of his life, Jolene Kay Wibbecke. They made their home in Brandon, IA where they raised their five children. Larry received his Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling from the University of Northern Iowa in 1996 and was a member of the Alpha Delta National Honors Society. He worked for many years as a Substance abuse Counselor at the Pathways Center in Waterloo, IA and later in Independence, IA. Volunteering was a big part of his life. He spent countless hours helping at the Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependence Center at Covenant Hospital in Waterloo, IA. Larry also served on the Board of Directors for the Buchanan County Volunteer Co-op. In 2012 he and Jolene retired and move to Glenwood, MO.

He enjoyed spending time outside, hunting and fishing. He was a cowboy at heart; he and Jolene would often travel to watch Rodeos, and Chuck Wagon races. But his family is what he loved most and spent as much time with his grandchildren as he could.

Larry is survived by his children; Jennifer (Jason) Johnson, Clarksville, IA, Michael (Meghan) Bonefas, Bennett, IA, David (Kodi Koehler) Bonefas, Center Point, IA, Danielle (Aaron) Ambrosy, Jesup, IA, and Samantha (Gary Jones) Bonefas, Bennett, IA, his grandchildren; Emilie (David) Kafer, Aubrey Bonefas, Katie (Andrew) Hershberger, Blake Johnson, Sadie and Morgan Bonefas, Addison and Conner Ambrosy, Leland and Maeson Koehler, Kaylee Bonefas, and Alexander and Kingston Jones, seven sisters; Rosemary (Paul) Gilson, Trenton, MO, Karen (Kraig) Emick, Jesup, IA, Kay (Clem) Delegardelle, Gilbertville, IA, Linda (Ted) Hollenbeck, Goodyear, AZ, Betty (Rick) Watson, Omaha, NE, Connie (Steve) Maynard, Independence, IA, Diane Bonefas, Omaha, NE, three brothers; John (Sue) Bonefas, Safford, AZ, Jerry Bonefas, Quasqueton, IA, and Butch (Jolene Christian) Bonefas, Jesup, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Burton and Rose Bonefas, and his beloved wife, Jolene Bonefas.

Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday September 17, 2019 at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home in Independence, IA. A Funeral Service will be held after the visitation at 8 PM with Military Honors provided by the Jesup American Legion. Burial will be held at Cedar Crest Cemetery at a later date.
