Obituary for Marjorie Jeanene Derr (Chesmore)

Marjorie J. Derr, 82, of Independence, IA died on Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence.

Marjorie was born on June 5, 1938, on the family farm in rural Rowley, IA the daughter of Herbert L. and Vonda E. (Kress) Chesmore. She attended the Cono Center School and was a 1957 graduate of the Quasqueton High School. Soon after graduating Marjorie started working at Micro Switch in Independence, IA. Through a friend she was introduced to a local solider serving in California, and they quickly began writing letters to each other. On September 20, 1959, she married John Derr at the Cono Center Church in Rowley, IA. They made their home together between Independence and Quasqueton. In 1974, they moved to John’s family farm, where they raised their four children. Together, they regularly attended the Old Thrashers for 30 consecutive years.

Marjorie worked for many years taking care of people at the County Home and B & D Services in Independence.

She is survived by her husband John Derr, Independence, her four sons, Mark Derr, Independence, Paul “Liz” Derr, Independence, IA, David Derr, Independence, and Brian (Donna) Derr, Independence, five grandchildren, Austin (Tifanie) Derr, Mitchel Derr, Kacie (Andrew Walztoni) Derr, Colby (Josie) Derr, Alex (Grace Stacy) Derr, eleven great grandchildren, two brothers, Keith (Florence) Chesmore, Mission, TX, Larry (Nadine) Chesmore, Independence, IA, a sister, Sara “Kathy” (Ronald) Holst, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Vonda Chesmore.

A lot of love was given in the past few years when Marjorie needed more assistance and care. The Derr family is extremely grateful for the care that was provided by Donna Derr.

Visitation will be held on Monday May 31, 2021, from 4 PM until 7 PM at the Quasqueton Union Church in Quasqueton, IA. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 at the Church with Rev. Kevin Jennings presiding. Burial will be held at the Quasqueton Cemetery.
