Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Schmadeke (Berns)

Mary E. (Berns) Schmadeke, 43, of Waterloo, IA died on Sunday August 25, 2019, at her home in Waterloo, IA.

Mary was born on February 16, 1976 in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Allan A. and Rosalita A. (Patrick) Berns. She was was baptized at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, IA. She was raised in Winthrop, IA and attended the East Buchanan Community Schools. In 1994, she was Confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA, and graduated from East Buchanan High School. She went on to study at the University of Iowa and later Winona State University, Winona, MN. Mary worked as a Headhunter/Recruiter for several different companies throughout the Midwest over for many years. She moved to Cedar Rapids, IA in 2002 where she met her husband, Craig L. Schmadeke. They were married in September 4, 2004 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, IA. In 2012 they moved to Waterloo, IA, where they decided to raise their children.

Her home was always open to family and friends. Entertaining people at home was one of her favorite things to do. She loved to throw parties for her children and would bake cakes and cookies for many birthday parties. Spending time with her children was the most important thing to her, especially
making smores by the campfire in their backyard.

Mary is survived by Craig L. Schmadeke, Waterloo, IA her children Natalie E., Benjamin L., and Jeremy J. Schmadeke all of Waterloo, IA, her parents Allan and Roselita Berns, three brothers; Kevin (Allison) Berns, Quasqueton, IA, David (Alexa) Berns, Independence, IA, and Philip (Brandi) Berns, Evansdale, IA, many aunts and uncles, ten nephews, and two nieces.

She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Amadeus and Viola Berns, and her maternal grandparents, Harold and Thelma Patrick.

Visitation will be held from 11 AM until 2 PM on Saturday at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Winthrop, IA. A private Family Funeral Service will be held later.
