Obituary for Nadine Rose Stevens (Jenkins)

Nadine R. Stevens was born on May 30, 1927 in Beatrice, NE the daughter of Harry and Rose (Rombeck) Jenkins. She attended the Beatrice Community Schools. In 1943, while she was out with friends at a bowling alley, she met Donald Wayne Stevens. They were married on September 30, 1944 in Beatrice, NE. Together they lived throughout the United States and Ontario, Canada, following Donald’s job as a Pipeline Welder. In 1972 they made their home on an acreage just outside of Independence, IA. Nadine became a Certified Nursing Assistant in 1974 and worked for several years at the Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence. For a short time in the 1980’s, they operated a Dry Cleaner business in Eldora, IA. Donald retired in 1987, and together they would spend their winters in Texas. Donald died on June 16, 1997. After Donald’s death, Nadine bought a house in Independence, where she would live until 2017, when she moved into Lexington Estates in Independence. There she enjoyed the company of the residents and appreciated the caring staff that became friends.

She loved to stay busy, and crocheting was one of her favorite hobbies. She spent many hours making blankets, clothes, and crochet animals for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Nadine died on Wednesday March 24, 2021 at the age of 93 at Lexington Estates.

Nadine is survived by her children, Jeanne Fair, Olathe, KS, Mike Stevens, Independence, IA, Jan (Tony) Hall, Winterset, IA, Kathy (Pat) Hayes, Waterloo, IA, Pam Johnson Harpers Ferry, IA, and Deedee (Scott) Stevens-Neal, Hopkins, MN, twenty grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Rose Jenkins, her husband Donald Stevens, two sons Thomas and Richard Stevens, two grandchildren, a daughter Therese Stevens, two brothers: Bill and Gene Jenkins, and a sister Marge White.

A private family funeral service will be held at the Reiff Family Center in Independence, burial will be held in the Wilson Cemetery in Independence, IA.
