Obituary for Robert Alvin "Bob" Bergman

Robert A. “Bob” Bergman, 64, of Independence, IA, died on December 19, 2019, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA after a hard-fought battle and complications with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome).

Bob was born on February 28, 1955 (two twenty-eight fifty-five) in Waterloo, IA, the son of Alvin M. and Alice C. (Johnson) Bergman. He was raised in Littleton, IA, and attended Jesup Community Schools. In his early years he worked for Carlson Construction helping to build new roads. In 1973, he started work at John Deere in Waterloo, IA, and worked there for thirty years until he retired. He also did a quick stint on the railroad while laid off from Deeres. On August 12, 1978 he married Helen M. Shriver at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, IA. They were later divorced on February 14, 2003. He was a member of the UAW 838, Wapsie Pool League, bowling league, Littleton Smelt Fry and Hoskie’s Halloween Party for many years. He was also an avid deer hunter in his younger years.

Bob loved spending time with his friends and family and rarely missed his children’s or grandchildren’s events throughout school and college. You could easily find him throwing black olives at a family get together or out riding Harley’s with Stoney. He was a Mr. Fix It to the core and never said “No” to someone in need. He’d rarely turn down a cold Busch NA and NEVER say “No” to someone in need of a ride home, no matter the time of day/night.

Bob is survived by his two daughters; Melanie (Shain Stone) Bergman, Independence, IA and Melissa Grimm, Independence, IA, four grandchildren; Keely and Teegan Cross, and Austin and Allyson Grimm, two sisters; Marg (Bill) Hall, and Judy (Chris) Jacobsen, a brother, Roy (Jean) Bergman all of Littleton, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin M. and Alice C. (Johnson) Bergman, and his best friends; LeRoy “Stoney” Stone, and Rick Casillas.

A Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 4 PM and a Memorial Service will be held at 4 PM on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Burial will be held at a later date.
