Obituary for Shirley Sylveen Franck (Smith)

Shirley S. Franck, 92, of Independence, IA died Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, IA.

Shirley was born on March 30, 1927 in rural Aurora, IA, the daughter of Carroll G. and Edna E. (Duckett) Smith. She attended the country schools in the rural Stanley, IA area, and was a 1944 graduate of the Aurora High School. On March 26, 1947 she married Raymond G. Myrton in Cedar Falls, IA, and they made their home in Aurora, IA, where they raised their two children. Raymond died on March 3, 1975. Shirley remarried two years later to Everett Franck; on March 30, 1977. They lived together on Everett’s farm in rural Aurora until their divorce in 1991. She moved to Independence, IA in 2000.

She loved being a part of the Aurora community and volunteered for years at the Aurora Library and helped children at the East Buchanan Schools in Winthrop, IA. Her favorite memories included spending time with her family and friends playing cards, and her social group called Kitchen Klatter Klub in Aurora. She enjoyed going on trips throughout the United States with family and friends over the years and was always eager for the next trip. But what she loved most was spending time, especially the holidays, with her family.

Shirley is survived by her children; Nancy (Larry) Kirchhoff, Sioux Falls, SD, and Robert (Karen) Myrton, Winthrop, IA, four grandchildren; Allison (Kevin) Berns, Quasqueton, IA, Adam (Morgan) Myrton, Eldridge, IA, Denise (Kevin) McCarty, Rock Rapids, IA, Dawn (Greg Lastovka) Kirchhoff, Elberon, IA, eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and a niece, Nina Miller, Billings, MT.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Edna Smith, her first husband, Raymond Myrton, a sister Leona Goddard, two brothers, Robert and Donald Smith, and a grandson David Kirchhoff.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA Burial will be held at Madison Township cemetery, Aurora, IA. Visitation will be held from 9 AM until 11 AM on Thursday at the Reiff Family Center.
