Obituary for Vada Rae Packer (Mills)

Vada R. Packer, 80, of Independence, IA died Thursday, October 10, 2019 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.

Vada was born on February 12, 1939 in Lake City, IA the daughter of Elmer and Velma E. (Fonken) Mills. In her early childhood her family moved to Los Angeles County California. She was a 1957 graduate of Van Nuys High School in Van Nuys, CA. In the early 1970’s Vada moved back to Lake city, IA. On June 29, 1972 she was united in marriage to Paul H. Packer Jr. in Owatonna, MN, and they made their home in Dyersville, IA. They moved to Fort Atkins, IA in 1986 and later to Otterville, IA in the early 2000’s

She enjoyed reading and spent many hours engrossed in her newest novel. She was known for her sourdough bread. She was an eighteen year cancer survivor.

Vada is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Paul H. Packer, Otterville, IA, her children Perry (Debi) Kimberlin, Simi Valley, CA, and Coleen Ball, Cedar Rapids, IA, three grandchildren, Jacob (Nora) Wilwert, Bossier City, LA, Luke (Erin)Wilwert, Monroe, NC, and Lee Wilwert, Cedar Rapids, IA, six great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law Beth (Larry) Brethorset, and Mary Breen, a niece and a nephew.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Velma Mills, a son-in-law, Steve Ball, a grand daughter, Jill Wilwert, and two brothers Jim and Jerry Mills.

A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
