One Saturday afternoon LeRoy had gone and gotten his dad's flatbed truck from the salvage yard to take over to my dad's place in Waterloo to help clean up brush. My brother-in-law was also helping out. I followed LeRoy over with the car and kids were with me. As we turned off the highway to my parent's place all I could see were a lot of flashing lights and fire trucks and ambulances parked in front of my paren'ts house. As I got closer the fire department would not let me go up the driveway. Finally I got up the driveway and saw the truck LeRoy had been driving parked out in my folk's back yard by the pile of brush and the fire department had someone down on the ground helping them out and my dad was pacing back and forth holding his hands. When LeRoy had pulled in the yard earlier he had seen my brother-in-law tossing a small can of gas on the brush pile. The brush pile was out and cold they thought as they had been burning earlier that morning. Apparently there was a spark and the gasoline ignited coming back onto my brother-in-law. LeRoy jumped out of the truck and tackled my brother-in-law to the ground rolling with him to get the fire put out that had ignited his clothing and hair. LeRoy got my dad off to the side as Dad's hands were burnt from trying to put the fire out on Brian. The fire dept. came and ambulances came. All that was left of Brian's coat was the zipper, collar and elastic wrist bands. His stocking cap melted into his hair and all that was left was the crown of the cap. LeRoy saved my dad from getting burned more and also saved Brian's life by rolling Brian to the ground and getting the fire out.
Brian was in the hospital for quite some time and to this day has the scars from the fire. Brian credits LeRoy for saving his life.
