Jo Anne Fangman Nero, 69, of Independence, Iowa, died on Sunday November 8, 2020 in her home.

Jo Anne was born on June 9, 1951, in Independence, Iowa, the second of six children to Bill and Eleanor Fangman. She grew up in Monti, Iowa, and graduated from East Buchanan High School in 1969. After attending some college, she spent time experiencing the world as a flight attendant. Jo Anne then married and had two children while she and her then-husband Tom relocated to Oelwein, Iowa, where they owned and operated a local dining establishment in the downtown district.

In 1986, Jo Anne and her family moved to the Kansas City area, where she made a home for over 30 years. While there, Jo Anne channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into an award-winning residential homebuilding company – one of the few women-owned businesses of its kind. After finishing her career in Kansas City, Jo Anne relocated back to Independence, Iowa, to be closer to extended family and friends.

Jo Anne loved to travel with family and friends, especially on her annual trips to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She also loved working around her home and spending time with her beloved cats. Jo Anne was admired by many and will be missed most for her relentless work ethic, her sense of humor and her charismatic personality.

Jo Anne is survived by her son John (Sherry) and grandson Elliott of Prairie Village, Kansas, her daughter Mary of Denver, Colorado, her sister Mary Pat (Dale) of Robins, Iowa, her brother Rick of Independence, Missouri, her sister Karen (Randy) of Independence, Iowa, her brother Donny (Alice) of Monti, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews and other close loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Carol.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on November 20, 2020, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Monti, Iowa, with inurnment at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Monti. Face masks and social distancing are required. The Reiff Family Center is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Buchanan County Animal Shelter or to another charity of your choice.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family. There are so many great memories I have of our many travels together. Her infectious laughter and joy in her accomplishments will never be forgotten. She will be missed by my entire family, and will always remember the great times we shared in both our homes. I know she is at peace and God has wrapped his loving arms around her. I hope Jerry met her at heavens gates with a big meow and welcome home.

I remember as young kids Jo Anne was sometimes called Josephine Annabelle by her uncles as they finished a day of hay baling by teasing the kids as they had their single beer before a great supper. The fun times included ballgames at Grandma and Grandpa's house almost every summer Sunday, with rules made up as the game went along, to fit the age of the baserunners. Childhood was as good as it gets.
