I walked into the bank one day to cash a check and Jerry called me into his office. He looked at me and said "you should borrow $500. It would be good for your credit rating." I told him I had no idea how to apply for a loan so he asked a few questions and typed my answers on a piece of paper. When he was done he had me sign it and chastised me very sternly to make sure I stopped by each month and made a payment. Then he put the $500 into my account. I made those payments as scheduled, every one of them. I was 17. I have often passed on his recommendation to others because the advice has served me well. My credit rating has seldom dipped down to the 800 mark in the almost 50 years since I took out that loan.

Back in 1979, I was 17 years old. I graduated in January and held jobs at both WVC and the Hotel Pinicon. My bank (the bank that my family and employers had used for decades) refused to give me a car loan without a co-signer. There was no chance that my parents would co-sign for me. I walked across the street and asked for a loan officer. Mr. McCalley welcomed me into his office. He asked about my jobs, who I hung around with, the amount I had saved up and my future plans. He said he would trust me and gave me a loan without a co-signer. From that loan, I had an excellent credit rating by age 19. I have never forgotten how Mr. McCalley trusted me. A few times when I saw him in the past 40 years at community dinners, I took a few moments to introduce myself and to thank him for helping get my first car and starting me on successful financial path.

He'll be missed. Always had the historical society in mind - 1970's was treasurer and later donated many items that we have on display.

Years ago, we crossed paths with Jerry frequently and enjoyed those encounters very much, now feel a sense of loss at his passing, but appreciative for having had the opportunity to know him.
